Background: Heart transplantation (HTx) is a life-saving therapy for infants, children and adults
with end-stage heart failure or complex, inoperable congenital cardiac defects. This
team performed its first case of orthotopic HTx in July 1988 and first paediatric
case (recipient's age under 18 years) in March 1996. The aim of this study was to
review retrospectively 15 paediatric patients who underwent orthotopic HTx. The mid-term
survival results in paediatrics and adults were compared.
