Background: The SYNTAX trial showed that coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains the standard
of treatment for left main and three-vessel coronary artery disease when compared
with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), with lower rates of major cardiac and
cerebrovascular events (MACCE [12.4% vs 17.8%]) and need for revascularisation at
12 months (5.9% vs 13.5%). Surgery did, however, have a higher rate of stroke in the
post-operative period (2.2% vs 0.6%).
