A Modified Sternal Closure Technique to Reduce the Incidence of Sternal Complications in High Risk Patients

      Introduction: Sternal dehiscence after cardiac surgery may lead to mediastinitis and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Closure techniques that distribute traction forces may reduce sternal instability. We describe a novel sternal closure technique which may improve stability of the sternum and thus reduce the incidence of dehiscence and mediastinitis. We review our use of this closure technique in high-risk patients over a six-year period.
