This year marks the first time that Heart, Lung and Circulation has commissioned a Special Issue on atrial fibrillation (AF). This print issue, entitled Atrial Fibrillation: State of the Art in 2017, was commissioned to showcase the rapid progress made by regional and global experts in the field of AF pathobiology, diagnosis, prevention and management.
To acknowledge the many years of AF-related progress made in arriving at the Special Issue, and as an accompanying volume to that, we are now launching a virtual archive called The Atrial Fibrillation Digital Collection, 2012-2017. With this, we aim to highlight the most notable papers in AF research and practice published in the Journal in the last five years or so. Not surprisingly, and in appropriate proportion to the most pressing global health impacts of this growing pandemic, the commonest theme addressed by these papers is stroke prevention in AF. Other papers relate to the expanding areas of catheter and surgical ablation, cardioversion, and risk factor management. To conclude this Digital Collection, there is an important paper on the intriguing prospects of gene therapy to treat AF.
We are delighted to commend both The Atrial Fibrillation Digital Collection, 2012-2017, and the Special Issue, Atrial Fibrillation: State of the Art in 2017, to our readers.
